The World/Our Gym

This year my friends and I found many ways to move
We were confident there was a lot it would improve
Like how we looked, our grades, immunity, and mood
So with help from coaches we set out to see what we could do

We played volleyball, kickball, dodgeball, and football as a group
And sort of formed a hip hop/B-boy troupe
Maybe someday we’ll dance back-up for Snoop (Dogg, that is)

On a road trip, we stopped to do chin-ups at a playground
Then some plyometrics – that is, we bounced around
And continued on to our destination town

When alone I shot some hoops and got my hand stands looking pretty sweet
Did jump rope double-unders to a beat
Good practice makes it more fun to compete

It’s amazing
What athletes can do, and we want in
So we made the world our gym
Yeah we made the world our gym

I played catch with my Dad and chased the neighbor’s dog around a field
And beat the school bus biking – that’s for real
My legs are getting strong like steel

We took swing and yoga community center classes when they ran
Looked like Michael Phelps when we swam
Not quite but hey – we do the best we can

Studying for finals we got giddy from the long review
A silent dance party was overdue
The library staff never even knew

It’s amazing
What athletes can feel, and we want in
So we made the world our gym
Yeah we made the world our gym

Sometimes we were sick or hurt, so we took time to heal
Then we got back to finding out how good this feels

We climbed Mount Baldy and admired orange, red, and yellow leaves
Though it got cold we stayed warm raking in short sleeves
There’s more to fall than football on TV

On different dates, I rollerbladed, played tennis, snowshoed, hiked, and ran
The girl for me no doubt’s a workout fan
And cares more about fitness than a tan

I stood outside an elevator, my partner spied on people going up
He’d signal me the floor at which they’d stop
I ran the stairs and beat them there just to see jaws drop

It’s amazing
What athletes can build, and we want in
So we made the world our gym
Yeah we made the world our gym

That’s about it, except for building that snow fort on winter break
And sledding and playing hockey on the lake
And doing squats and push-ups in the airport and not caring what strangers thought,
Playing hallway hockey at home,
Building a kicker and working on ski and snowboard freestyle moves,
Watching The Daily Show and Colbert Report while pedaling on a bike trainer,
Climbing ropes, walls, rocks, trees, and frozen waterfalls
Shoveling snow off the baseball field so we could play before May,
Balancing on a Swiss, or “fit” ball on my stomach, back, and knees
Building snowmen to act out scenes in the yard,
Filling bags with roadside trash (for time),
And capturing the flag at a 4th of July party,
Lifting barbells, dumbbells, and kettlebells in my friend’s garage and several weightrooms
Paddling canoes, kayaks, and rafts,
Throwing a Frisbee and trying to look cool sometimes catching it,
Weeding flower and vegetable gardens by hand and
Shoveling the driveway because Roundup and snowblowers are for quitters, no offense, and
Juggling a soccer ball and counting the highest number of touches before a drop.

It’s amazing
What you and I can do, so come join in
Strengthening our core and every limb
Yeah, there’s a lot we’ll have to do again
Believe it – our motto is carpe diem
Help us make the world our gym
Help us make (oh yeah, and practicing for when 4-square becomes an Olympic sport)
The world our gym
